The street lighting of the Capital City of Warsaw is powered exclusively by energy from renewable sources. The Municipal Road Authority in Warsaw has chosen a new energy supplier through a tender process. The winner of the public tender was Hekla Energy, which submitted the best offer. The second place was held by the current energy supplier for ZDM, Veolia Energy Contracting. Hekla Energy provides energy solely from renewable sources, and direct contracting of energy with independent producers allows for very attractive rates.
The signed agreement covers a wide range of services. In addition to supplying street lighting throughout Warsaw, the contract will ensure energy supplies for traffic lights, underground ventilation, the illumination of Warsaw’s bridges, as well as elevators for people with disabilities and ZDM buildings. The Municipal Road Authority in Warsaw, which has managed the city’s street infrastructure for years, is committed to projects aimed at minimizing negative environmental impact and improving the quality of life for residents of the capital, while emphasizing the need to reduce energy costs for the managed infrastructure. Thanks to cooperation with Hekla Energy, ZDM plans to increase the use of renewable energy sources, which will contribute to a reduction of CO2 emissions by over 37,000 tons. The contract will allow for approximately 15% savings compared to last year’s energy supply agreement.
Hekla Energy sources its supplied energy from over 1,000 renewable energy power plants located in Poland, belonging to independent investors, as well as from its own portfolio of renewable energy plants. The company holds a several percent share in the Polish energy buyback market from photovoltaic farms and biogas plants, but the supplied energy is also supplemented by energy from wind farms and several hydropower plants. The increasing number of renewable energy power plants built in Poland by independent investors enables independent energy suppliers to contract directly with producers, allowing them to offer consumers more favorable rates than those provided by state-owned companies.
Energy supplies for the street lighting of the Capital City of Warsaw will cover over 120,000 street lamps connected to nearly 3,000 energy meters (PPE), over 800 km of roads, which will result in a total annual energy consumption of nearly 50,000 MWh.
The agreement with Hekla Energy offers the City not only financial benefits but also a step towards sustainable development. The use of green energy in areas such as street lighting and traffic lights will significantly reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere and position the city as one of the leaders in green transformation among local government units. Additionally, the use of renewable energy in ventilation and building illuminations will improve air quality and residents’ quality of life.
“Hekla Energy is proud to collaborate with the Municipal Road Authority in Warsaw and support their eco-friendly initiatives. We believe that our partnership will contribute to creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly environment for all residents of the capital,” summarizes Szymon Skóra, Sales Division Director.
